It's a real mystery why QAnon followers like Jo Rae Perkins can attract enough votes to win a Senate primary.

President Trump threatens to pull RNC from NC, says Gov. Roy Cooper 'in shutdown mood'
Monday, May 25, 2020

https://abc7chicago.com/6210242/

CHARLOTTE, North Carolina -- President Donald Trump on Monday threatened to pull the Republican National Convention from North Carolina if Governor Roy Cooper doesn't guarantee that full attendance will be allowed at the arena.

The conference is scheduled to start on August 24 at the Spectrum Center in Charlotte.

Currently, mass gatherings at venues like arenas are prohibited as part of Cooper's executive order because of the potential spread of the novel coronavirus.

"I love the Great State of North Carolina, so much so that I insisted on having the Republican National Convention in Charlotte at the end of August. Unfortunately, Democrat Governor, twitter.com/RoyCooperNC is still in Shutdown mood & unable to guarantee that by August we will be allowed...full attendance in the Arena," Trump wrote in a series of tweets the morning of Memorial Day.

Several people hung twitter.com/GovAndyBeshear in effigy.

[IMAGE: Effigy with face of Governor Beshear with "SIC SEMPER TYRANNIS" hung around the governor's neck. For those unaware of the context, the relevant historical reference is to the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. The Confederate-allied assassin who I will not grace by naming jumped down to the stage at Ford's Theatre, having just shot the President, and shouted that out before fleeing.]

A deadly ‘checkerboard’: Covid-19’s new surge across rural America
By Reis Thebault and Abigail Hauslohner

https://www.washingtonpost.com/nation/2020/05/24/coronavirus-rural-america-outbreaks/

The novel coronavirus arrived in an Indiana farm town mid-planting season and took root faster than the fields of seed corn, infecting hundreds and killing dozens. It tore though a pork processing plant and spread outward in a desolate stretch of the Oklahoma Panhandle. And in Colorado’s sparsely populated eastern plains, the virus erupted in a nursing home and a pair of factories, burning through the crowded quarters of immigrant workers and a vulnerable elderly population.

As the death toll nears 100,000, the disease caused by the virus has made a fundamental shift in who it touches and where it reaches in America, according to a Washington Post analysis of case data and interviews with public health professionals in several states. The pandemic that first struck in major metropolises is now increasingly finding its front line in the country’s rural areas; counties with acres of farmland, cramped meatpacking plants, out-of-the-way prisons and few hospital beds.

Fired scientist defends her COVID-19 data role, portrays Florida Dept. of Health as corrupt

Speaking publicly for the first time in an interview with CNN, a public statement posted on her blog and emails to FLORIDA TODAY, fired Florida Department of Health scientist Rebekah Jones defended herself on Friday night and laid bare allegations of corrupt interference in the state's COVID-19 data by top officials.

While she specifically makes no implication that Governor Ron DeSantis was involved in efforts to massage or hide information on the state's COVID-19 dashboard, she paints a picture of senior FDOH officials overly eager to appease the governor and his plans to reopen the state.

Jones, is credited with building, designing and managing Florida's COVID-19 Data and Surveillance Dashboard, which was praised by researchers, including by a White House scientist, as a shining example of transparency. But in an email last week, Jones said she was removed from the helm of the dashboard as of May 5, because of her commitment to "accessibility and transparency."

After FLORIDA TODAY broke the story, Jones further alleged that she was fired for refusing to "manually change data" to favor the reopening plan.

Trump Economic Adviser Kevin Hassett: 'Our Human Capital Stock Is Ready To Get Back To Work'
White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett on Sunday said that workers -- who he referred to as "human capital stock" -- are "ready to get back to work" during the coronavirus pandemic.

White House economic adviser Kevin Hassett on Sunday said that workers -- who he referred to as "human capital stock" -- are "ready to get back to work" during the coronavirus pandemic.

In an interview on CNN, host Dana Bash asked Hassett if unemployment could be in double digits when President Donald Trump faces re-election in November.

"Yes, I do," Hassett replied. "But I think all the signs of economic recovery are going to be raging everywhere and the only thing we're going to be really debating as economists is are we going to get back to where we were or is it going to be kind of a long haul to get there?"

The economic adviser added: "Our human capital stock is ready to get back to work and so there are lots of reasons to believe we can get going way faster than we have in previous crises."

On weekend dedicated to war dead, Trump tweets insults, promotes baseless claims and plays golf

As the death toll in the coronavirus pandemic neared 100,000 Americans this Memorial Day weekend, President Trump derided and insulted perceived enemies and promoted a baseless conspiracy theory, in between rounds of golf.

In a flurry of tweets and retweets Saturday and Sunday, Trump mocked former Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams’s weight, ridiculed the looks of House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) and called former Democratic presidential rival Hillary Clinton a “skank.”

He revived long-debunked speculation that a television host with whom Trump has feuded may have killed a woman and asserted without evidence that mail-in voting routinely produces ballot stuffing.

He made little mention of the sacrifice Americans honor on Memorial Day or the grim toll of the virus.

In fact, Trump’s barrage of social media attacks stood in sharp contrast to a sober reality on a weekend for mourning military dead — the number of Americans whose lives have been claimed by the novel coronavirus has eclipsed the combined total of U.S. deaths from wars in Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Iraq and Afghanistan.
